Renter's insurance
Often yes — many leases require it, and even when they don't, renter's insurance is inexpensive (frequently under $15/month) and covers your belongings against theft, fire, and water damage, plus some liability. Your landlord's insurance covers the building, not your stuff. Some students are still covered under a parent's homeowner's policy while in school — check before buying your own. Get a policy in place by your lease start date.
